What Does "Toile de Jouy" Mean?
The name is French for "cloth from Jouy." It refers to the printed fabric first made in the town of Jouy-en-Josas, near Paris, at a factory founded by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf in 1760. More than two and a half centuries later, the style still carries the name of his little town.

A Short History of Toile
Toile grew out of Europe's love for the vivid printed cottons arriving from India in the 1600s. France had banned printed cotton to protect its wool and silk trades, but when the ban lifted in 1759, Oberkampf opened his Jouy-en-Josas factory the very next year.
Early designs were printed from carved woodblocks, and from 1770 from fine copperplates, which made it possible to print the large, intricate scenes toile became famous for. The celebrated artist Jean-Baptiste Huet designed many of them: shepherds and shepherdesses, allegories of the four seasons, even the news of the day, all in a single color, usually blue, red, or sepia, on a soft cream ground.
Why Toile Still Feels So Timeless
Toile has never really gone out of fashion, and right now it is having a real moment.
